My new long, lace shawl-collared vest
February 22, 2010
I've been asked why I don't "do color". I'll beg to differ with this vest, the latest project off of my knitting needles. I'm in love with this gorgeous shade of green (called "lettuce" in Knitpicks Andean Silk).
Ok - so yes, I don't do different colors and colorwork knitting, as I'm much more of a lace, cables, and texture kind of gal. But you'll have to agree when you see this vest that I do appreciate a striking color, eh?
This vest is my current obsession. I wanted a longish vest, and I definitely wanted the shawl collar and some sort of angled front. Then, of course, is my need for stitch patterns. I used an all-over lace stitch for the bottom, then transitioned to a simple all-over cable pattern after some gathering at the waist.
The generous shawl-collar and wide ribbed front bands are in 1x1 ribbing. The upper back is in 2x2 ribbing for a nice fit.
Do you like it? It's my new fave. I didn't add any closures because I didn't want to limit how it was to be worn. Here are photos showing it pinned under the collar and at the waist using Romi's Shawl Pin. I also love it left open or belted with a wide leather belt.
Pattern coming soon! Gotta finish the girl's ruffled edge cardigan first. Then, this one is next in line.

So pretty! I don't do a lot of color work, either, and love lots of texture, so this is right up my alley! Love it.

Absolutely gorgeous. I want to make it NOW! Vest, shawl collar, great stitch pattern--what more could a girl want.

I love it!

I love it:) I need this pattern!!

I LOVE it!!! I echo your thoughts as to color -- black, grey and blue are as wild as I get, and those are SOLID colors, not intermingled. But I *LOVE* that green. Such a pretty shade, and the pattern is so flattering. I think I would actually make an attempt at knitting it! :) I love it closed with Romi's pin, best. Very nice. Looking forward to seeing the pattern, and other folks' versions!

Posted by: Elise | February 23, 2010 at 10:49 AM
I LOVE this pattern! As soon as it comes out, it is going to the top of my list. The color is perfect too. You don't need a lot of colorwork - your patterns speak for themselves!
Posted by: Jeanine | February 23, 2010 at 10:59 AM
Great vest! I love the colour & the style - it's a vest with a lot of spunk!
If you need a test knitter, let me know!!!

This is absolutely beautiful. At first I thought it needed a closure -- but I've changed my mind. It's perfect just as it is!!
Posted by: Ray | February 23, 2010 at 11:47 AM
This is EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO KNIT NOW!
How do you read my mind and have exactly what I am looking for?
When will this be available?

This is lovely gracefull vest! I love your club for the cables and and lace! It is why I joined, so keep up the beautiful designs. I enjoy the colors you choose, as they allow all your fans to try other colors. Sometimes it is the color that sells a design, and doesn't let you really see the pattern so much as the color. Your designs never do that, are lovely, and can be done in any color to look good. Color work is fun and beautiful too, but fairisle type styles tend to have added bulk. Your designs are lacy and so feminine, so to me unique! They also work up fairly quickly, use lovely soft lofty yarn, so there is hope to finish a garment in good time. Thanks for all your hard work!

I love the vest, it can be worn with a skirt or dress pants or with a pair of jeans. I like it best with the pin but like that it can be worn many ways. Just not sure what color to knit it in

It's absolutely beautiful. The color is striking. I prefer solid colors as well my favorites are the "blues". I also think that this would be great with sleeves as a jacket.
I'm looking forward to purchasing this pattern.

Yummy! I'm a plus-size lady and really hope this is available in larger sizes as I think it would be totally wearable for me. Love the green also, but I'd probably do it in purple, my personal fav.

I need to knit this, I'm off to a wedding in the summer and this is perfect for the guest breakfast the next morning, as soon as the pattern is out I will be casting on
Posted by: amanda | February 24, 2010 at 04:57 AM
I really love this pattern; it is so versatile. You could wear one in color over a black short skirt and a thin black sweater with black boots or tights and high heels. A white summer version would look great over something long and flowing or as a night piece over a little summer dress with strappy sandals. This is one pattern that I will definitely be getting.

This is beautiful! I am about to change jobs where I will actually have to wear "work clothes". You know, the dress up type! I've worked in jeans & pullovers for the past 10 years, but now it's dress-up time! I want to knit me some pretty vests & accessories. This looks perfect as I need longer, cover-the-bumps, items! Oh, & green is my 3rd favorite color now - it was my grandson's favorite color - he passed away last September. Red is my favorite, purple second (Grandma's). Am I a sentimentalist or what!
Posted by: Cynthia Wilbanks | February 24, 2010 at 05:59 AM
I love this vest! I'll most likely knit two, one for work and one for not-at-work. Work is very conservative, so even though I love the bright green, I'd have to use gray yarn. Black trousers, a nice blouse, and the vest with an elegant pin. I don't think anyone would complain about the lack of a jacket.
For home wear... the possibilities are endless. I'm thinking burgundy or dark green. It would look great with jeans, a black turtleneck, and combat boots. Or I could really goth it up with a long velvet skirt, a black blouse, vest held in place with a more ornate pin... it's one of those pieces that can be styled many different ways.
Posted by: Batty | February 24, 2010 at 06:55 AM
So pretty! I don't normally like vests, but I love the feminine cables and updated shawl collar. It's long enough to be dressy and work as an accessory, or a warm layer over jeans and a turtleneck...very versatile, I think! You may have converted me to a vest wearer! =)
Posted by: Angela | February 24, 2010 at 08:21 AM
This vest is lovely! I would wear this garment with a turtle neck match colour; a shawl pin; long trouser folded just under knees; with long boots! This vest is very versatile... could look lovely with a "A" line skirt at knee length with a large belt over the vest... That's lovely!

I love this vest and the color of the yarn you knit it in. This is a must have pattern. Please hurry and make this pattern available ASAP.

Absolutely Beautiful! Can't wait for the pattern.
Posted by: Sylvia | February 26, 2010 at 01:58 PM
This is gorgeous. I hope it's going to be in plus sizes because I am a plus size woman who also is tall. So, this long line is perfect for my body shape vs short or shorter garments.

So Beautiful! It's next on the list to knit. Where can I get that sweater pin?!
Posted by: lynn | March 09, 2010 at 06:24 AM
Hi Lynn! The sweater pin is one from DesignsbyRomi.com. You can read my review of her pins here: http://blog.sweaterbabe.com/knitting/2009/09/elegant-shawl-pins.html. They add a very nice touch to any sweater or vest!

I love this vest so much I had to write twice. I can't wait for the pattern to come out! I hope so much that it will be in plus sizes (3X). It is so perfect and so beautiful I will be heartbroken if I'm left out because I'm well, let's say, "ample"! There are so few patterns that accommodate my body type which is "apple" (vs "pear"). I carry most of my weight from the tummy up and my most flattering style top has got to be long, otherwise it hits me in my largest part and I look, quite frankly, much like "Humpty Dumpty" (shapewise)LOL. So, when I saw this, it was as if you had designed it just for me. The color is gorgeous too! I love greens of just about any shade! I'm checking my email all the time, just waiting for the news that I can get this perfectly gorgeous vest. It will be a major challenge for me knitting-wise, but I'm going to join the Club when it comes out so I can get plenty of help. WOW, what an amazing talent you are, Sweaterbabe!! BRAVO!!

Is this available yet?

Almost... off to the tech editor right now. Knitting Club members will receive it early next month and then it will be available for purchase to all early/mid-April. I'll definitely update this blog post and annouce through the newsletter.
Thanks for your patience! 7 sizes can take awhile to write up (in additon to me parenting 3 little kids and only being able to work at this part-time!). So, thanks for your understanding too!

I've been obsessively checking my email everyday. I, like your many other fans/customers, have been waiting with bated breath for the release of this pattern. I literally smile at least once a day (if things aren’t going so well) when I think of all the fun I’ll have buying the yarn, the needles and of course the pattern and knitting it up! I read your 3.24 post that it's off to editing...the countdown begins! Thanks!

Not to be a pain, but is there any possibility this pattern can be adjusted to have sleeves? It's lovely as it is, but for my climate, would be more functional for me, and a more attractive purchase, if it came with optional instructions for sleeves....
Posted by: Brady | April 15, 2010 at 04:44 AM
I bought this pattern and love it. But I live in the South, and wonder if anyone has tried it in a linen or cotton yarn? I know I would get more use out of a lighter weight fabric.

Specialists claim that business loans help a lot of people to live their own way, because they are able to feel free to buy necessary stuff. Furthermore, some banks give sba loan for different classes of people.
